Fluorescent lights fill every corner of the room, a stark contrast to the darkness outside. Inside everything is bright, and calming, from the paint on the walls to the bright blue uniforms of the front desk staff, to the glow of the televisions. But the people in the room are anything but cheery.

Distress, worry and sadness show on the faces of the half dozen or so people waiting in the room. It’s well after midnight and the waiting room at Chicago Veterinary Emergency Services on the Northwest Side is filled with several families and patients.

Chicago Veterinary Emergency Services is a full-service veterinary office dedicated to feline and canine medical emergencies. An average night sees dozens of patients coming through the doors of the clinic, located at 3123 N. Clybourn Ave.

Chicago Cop Striving to Take Next Step

By Lauren Howard

Ray Charles said it best when he sang the lyrics “You know the nighttime, darling, is the right time, to be with the one you love.”

Unfortunately, for many people who work nights, that time is reserved for providing a service to receive a fee. People can enjoy what they do, do what pays the bills or both.

For Chicago Police Officer Darius Parker, 30, working midnight to 8 a.m. five nights a week definitely pays the bills. Parker, who has been a cop for four years, works at the 6th District Gresham Police Station, 7808 S. Halsted St.

Parker is usually an early arrival to the station.

“I arrive early to talk with the afternoon or 3 to 11 [p.m.] guys,” Parker said. “You never know what you’re gonna find out.”

Everyone has a passion, that inner motivation that, sometimes, makes people wake up in the morning, or embark on the wildest odysseys.

That is what drives “Los Luchadores Independientes,” a group of Latino pro wrestlers who transform themselves with colorful masks and outfits, and train into all hours of the night to pursue their dream of performing for a few hours in the ring.

When the night falls in Chicago, 17 Mexican wrestlers leave their lives and jobs and adopt secret identities to participate in Lucha Libre wrestling. They meet for training Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. or 10 p.m., or on Sunday mornings.
